How Self-Advocacy Can Save Your Life Featuring Tiffanie Janowitz
A conversation with Tiffanie Janowitz, CEO of Limitless Society, on patient advocacy, personal growth, and breaking past self-limiting beliefs
In a world where we're often taught to defer to experts and follow established protocols, one woman's story demonstrates the life-saving power of trusting your instincts. Tiffanie Janowitz, CEO of Limitless Society and former finance executive, recently joined our podcast to share her remarkable journey of health advocacy—a journey that literally saved her life and reshaped her entire approach to helping others break free from limitations.
About Tiffanie
Tiffanie Janowitz is a breast cancer survivor, mother, wife, and the CEO of Limitless Society—a multimillion-dollar coaching company focused on helping people integrate powerful frameworks into their life and business. With a story rooted in self-advocacy, healing, and transformation, Tiffanie teaches individuals how to trade “fine” for true freedom by owning their voice and stepping into their most authentic life. After walking away from a life that wasn’t in alignment, a dominant religion, and a corporate career, she now empowers others to rewrite their narrative through mindset shifts, habit stacking, and infrastructure that sustains growth. She is a sought-after speaker, mentor, and guide for anyone ready to stop settling and start living boldly.
When Everything Looks Perfect on Paper—But Something Still Feels Wrong
Picture this: You're at the peak of your physical fitness, spiritual wellness, and mental health. You're having what you'd call a "kick-ass year" in every measurable way. Yet something deep inside whispers that all is not well. What do you do when the tests say you're fine, but your inner voice says otherwise?
This was Tiffanie's reality when she first noticed something was off with her health. Despite being told repeatedly that her mammogram results were normal and that she had "dense breast tissue" with no cause for concern, she couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong.
"I had that inner voice that kept kicking and saying, but you're not just fine. Let's pay attention a little bit more," Tiffanie recalls. "That's why you're listening to this—because you have sharpened these tools so well that this little tiny piece is not jiving with everything else."
The Healthcare Encounter That Changed Everything
What made the difference in Tiffanie's story wasn't just her persistence, but one crucial interaction with a nurse practitioner who gave her permission to trust herself. When Tiffanie expressed her concerns, the nurse practitioner said something that would prove to be life-saving:
"I can appreciate what you're saying. We're gonna order more tests like you're wishing for. And what I wanna tell you is if something doesn't feel right, you do not stop with that answer. You continue to listen to yourself."
This simple validation—this permission to trust her own instincts—set Tiffanie on a path that would ultimately reveal breast cancer that had been missed by multiple standard screenings.
Building the Muscle of Self-Advocacy
According to Tiffanie, self-advocacy isn't something you're born with—it's a skill that requires practice. "It's a muscle," she explains. "It's just like confidence. You're not born with confidence. You put in the reps to build that."
But how do you start building this crucial skill? Tiffanie suggests beginning small:
"My first reps of using my voice in a really big situation was when I was 21 years old... But it started with some little things of saying yes I want to do that or no I don't want to do that, and sometimes it was just in my own mind because being vocal about that can get scary."
The Foundation: Creating Space to Listen
One of the most powerful aspects of Tiffanie's story is how she had created the conditions to hear her inner voice clearly. As a CEO, mother of a three-year-old, and wife, she had to be "fiercely protective" of her time and energy.
"I wake up before my kiddo wakes up a couple hours before he wakes up. That's me time, whether I'm working and getting some business stuff out of the way or whether I'm doing some reading and having some quiet time and some journaling."
This intentional space-making allowed her to distinguish between normal stress or fatigue and something genuinely concerning. When you're taking care of your physical fitness, nutrition, sleep, and mental health, you create a smaller "margin of error"—making it easier to identify when something is truly off.
The Misconception About Self-Care
One of the most striking insights from our conversation was Tiffanie's perspective on self-care. Far from being selfish, she argues that taking care of yourself is essential for serving others effectively.
"When you look at how many hours you have, even in a single day, if you are showing up for yourself very first thing in the morning and being crazy about your time and what you're doing... if that lets you show up as a better leader in whatever role it is, it's just like when you're thinking about the mechanics of a car. If I put 85 [octane gas] into my Ferrari, it's not going to run very well."
This reframe is crucial: self-advocacy and self-care aren't about being selfish—they're about optimizing your ability to show up for the people and purposes that matter most to you.
Finding Your Why in the Midst of Exhaustion
When asked what advice she'd give to people who feel too exhausted to advocate for themselves, Tiffanie's answer was immediate: "You need to go back to what is your purpose and what is your why."
She emphasizes that this doesn't have to be something earth-shattering: "That doesn't have to be something huge. That can be your why that day. That can be your why for that hour. But if you don't identify a why or a purpose, you will be exhausted every day."
For Tiffanie, her "why" included her responsibility to the people who rely on her—her family, her team, her clients. But she also makes a crucial point: "If it's not someone else, it is yourself. And finding that internal why" can be enough to fuel the action you need to take.
The Bigger Picture: Creative Problem-Solving in Life and Business
Tiffanie's health journey taught her something profound that now shapes her work at Limitless Society: "There is always room to go a different route. Your classic textbook route is rarely what will fit majority of what people need."
This insight applies far beyond healthcare. As entrepreneurs, leaders, and individuals pursuing meaningful goals, we often face situations where the standard approach isn't working. Tiffanie's experience demonstrates that creative problem-solving isn't just helpful—it can be life-saving.
"The biggest thing I learned was again to creatively problem solve until you are satisfied. If you feel at the end of any result that you are sitting in freedom, then that's the end goal."
The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything
Perhaps the most powerful concept Tiffanie shared was about how we respond to problems. When challenges arise, she suggests paying attention to your first internal response:
"Are you asking yourself, why me? Or are you asking yourself, what do I need to learn here? Because those are big differentiators that will again change the trajectory of how you're handling it, whether it is in a business setting, in a leadership space, or whether it is a personal health problem that has come up."
This simple shift from victim mentality to growth mentality can transform how we navigate not just health challenges, but every obstacle we encounter.
Practical Steps to Start Your Own Advocacy Journey
If Tiffanie's story resonates with you, here are some concrete steps you can take:
1. Start Small and Build the Muscle
Practice saying "no" to things you genuinely don't want to do. Begin with low-stakes situations and work your way up to more significant decisions.
2. Create Space for Self-Reflection
Establish a routine that gives you quiet time to check in with yourself—whether that's early morning journaling, evening reflection, or something else that works for your schedule.
3. Take Inventory of What You're Fueling Yourself With
Tiffanie's homework for listeners: "Take inventory of what you are fueling yourself with and choose one thing on that list that you know you've needed to shift and just make the decision to shift that for you."
4. Build Your Support System
Surround yourself with people who encourage your self-advocacy rather than dismissing your concerns. As Tiffanie noted, having people who said "Yeah, if you're feeling something, then go for it" was crucial to her persistence.
5. Define Your Ethos
Develop a clear understanding of your values and purpose. When you know what matters most to you, decision-making becomes less emotional and more logical.
The Ripple Effects of Self-Advocacy
What's remarkable about Tiffanie's story is how her personal health advocacy journey led her to a greater purpose. Her experience of having to fight for proper testing and treatment didn't just save her life—it reinforced her calling to help others advocate for themselves in all areas of life.
"It really validated my responsibility to show up as a mentor every single day, as an example to our members in our program, as an example to the people in my life, but a big responsibility also to continue practicing service and gratitude and teaching people the importance of that."
This is the beautiful paradox of self-advocacy: when you learn to show up for yourself, you become infinitely more capable of showing up for others.
The Continuing Journey
Tiffanie's story doesn't end with her diagnosis and treatment. It continues every day as she helps others through Limitless Society break past their own self-limiting beliefs and step into the lives they truly want to live.
Her message is both simple and profound: you have more power than you realize. Whether you're navigating a health concern, building a business, or simply trying to create a life that feels authentic to you, the first step is learning to listen to your own voice—and then having the courage to act on what it tells you.
"When you feel seen and heard and, you know, couple that with a safe space, there is some really powerful magic there. That's the space that you get to grow."
